Summary

**THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER**

"An unforgettable—and Hollywood-bound—new thriller。。。 A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy。"
Entertainment Weekly

Alex Michaelides's The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive。

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect。 A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas。 One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word。

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety。 The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London。

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia。 His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him。。。。

The silent patient。 Where do I start? Well let me just say this was definitely an intriguing read。 At first I was ready to discover the reasoning behind why Alicia killed her husband (not a spoiler), but the story took a turn that was completely unexpected! I really like how we delve deeper into Theo’s past as well as Alicia’s and seeing how both of their perspectives collided was honestly jaw dropping! I saw that the author was inspired by Agatha Christie and that is apparent in this novel for sure。 I’ve also seen some people say that it had a slow start, but I was hooked from the beginning。 Especially with the last few chapters, so many twist and turns I could not put the book down! If you like contemporary-gothic style writing and psychological thrillers with plot twists, you should read this! In the end I would give this a solid 3 1/2 out of 5 stars only because I wished some plot points went a different way than they did, but overall I enjoyed this book and it kept me wanting to know more。 。。。more

Pretty disappointed in this one。 Started skimming 3/4th of the way through。 That’s never a good sign。 The main character’s decisions seemed very unrealistic and made him unsympathetic to me。 Red herrings started dropping into the story conveniently, but somewhat undeveloped。 Sinister characters appeared in unbelievable ways。 The concept of the novel was intriguing。 I’ll try the author’s next book and see if, what to me, were rough edges, get smoothed out。

Eliza

really hard to put down, huge final twist, a lot of allusions which i loved, overall great psychological thriller。

3。5 stars, rated down。Okay, first of all, I just want to applaud the author for having such short chapters。 I don’t know why, but I tend to feel so much more engaged when chapters aren’t 20 pages long。 The writing style was also very enjoyable, and despite being an adult thriller/mystery, it didn’t read like the ones where there’s too-vivid descriptions and not enough action。I liked the plot twist, but it wasn’t something that made me gasp out loud。 The psychological elements were incredibly wel 3。5 stars, rated down。Okay, first of all, I just want to applaud the author for having such short chapters。 I don’t know why, but I tend to feel so much more engaged when chapters aren’t 20 pages long。 The writing style was also very enjoyable, and despite being an adult thriller/mystery, it didn’t read like the ones where there’s too-vivid descriptions and not enough action。I liked the plot twist, but it wasn’t something that made me gasp out loud。 The psychological elements were incredibly well written, and I’m definitely going to be picking up more thoughtful books like this! 。。。more

This book is one of them。The Silent Patient is a psychological thriller (people interested in psychology will find their food for thought)。The story surrounds a girl named Alicia, a known painter who had killed her husband。 Since she refused to utter a word after the incident, it was decided in the trial that she would go to a psychiatric centre and not prison。 Although people working in the centre, as well as her psychotherapist, did their utmost to make her speak, she remained silent and expressionless。 After six years, Theo Faber, a psychotherapist and the narrator of this story, successfully got selected in 'Grove,' the centre at which Alicia was admitted。 He decided to treat Alicia and was agog to help her。 From Alicia's entries in her personal diary, we eventually come to know that she was head over heels for her husband。 Hence, the question arises - Why did she kill him? Why did she become unmitigatedly silent? What did Alicia express through her paintings? All these questions are answered as you progress through this gripping book!Readers will know Alicia through her diary, which is quite interesting。 The final twist honestly made me scream silently。 Moreover, I genuinely appreciate the piquant writing style。 The way the twist is revealed and the way the story ends makes it all the more arresting。 The Silent Patient is one of the most thrilling books I have ever read, and I wish I could compel everyone who's reading my review into buying it! This is a must-read for all thriller enthusiasts。 。。。more

Holy Cow!! Why did I put this book off for so long?!?! All the hype had me worried but luckily, I was not let down。Not exactly the ending that I saw coming but I loved it! I had a character in mind but mine theory was kinda way out there。 I can't list any specifics without giving something away because it's too fresh on my mind。 A solid 5 stars!! Holy Cow!! I rarely read "psychological thrillers," but this one grabbed my attention when it promised an artist and a mental hospital。 It didn't disappoint, and I found myself thinking of things to do that allowed for listening at the same time。 There are twists, connections, and little hints of truth that kept me with it。 In an interview with the author at the end, he said he paid particular attention to how it would sound when read aloud。。。part of the reason it is so successful as an audio book。 I rarely read "psychological thrillers," but this one grabbed my attention when it promised an artist and a mental hospital。 It didn't disappoint, and I found myself thinking of things to do that allowed for listening at the same time。 There are twists, connections, and little hints of truth that kept me with it。 In an interview with the author at the end, he said he paid particular attention to how it would sound when read aloud。。。part of the reason it is so successful as an audio book。 。。。more

Well, damn。So, I love a good mystery。 The problem with mysteries for me, however, is that I've read/watched too many of them and very few of them get me anymore。Welp。 Congratulations, Alex Michaelides。 You got me。 I did not see the ending coming。So, a woman kills her husband and goes mute。 A psychotherapist works with her to try to get her to speak and。。。well。。。The interesting thing about this story - No spoilers here - is that I saw this story ending two ways - with our antagonist getting away Well, damn。So, I love a good mystery。 The problem with mysteries for me, however, is that I've read/watched too many of them and very few of them get me anymore。Welp。 Congratulations, Alex Michaelides。 You got me。 I did not see the ending coming。So, a woman kills her husband and goes mute。 A psychotherapist works with her to try to get her to speak and。。。well。。。The interesting thing about this story - No spoilers here - is that I saw this story ending two ways - with our antagonist getting away with it or not。 Interestingly enough, I'd have been satisfied either way。 This was a well constructed story。 。。。more
